Can someone please help me with this. I have done research on troops and this doesn't make any since to me. This was the fifth attack of five and the defender switched from Envade to Defend before the hit.

This doesn't surprise me any. Not to be mean but this player played you. He outmaneuvered you. The first attack, the one where you sent vbats, he had the perfect counter for. Your vbats had no chance against that many nos. The other one where you sent the nos, your army had no chance against what they had defending. Also something else to take into consideration, your researches compared to this player's researches. If he had lvl 10 researches and you had lower level ones, you had no chance. A rule of thumb, don't send different waves to try to accomplish something. One wave of the right stuff is impossible to defend. Had I been in your alliance, that player would have been wiped before you lost anything. To look at some impressive wipes, check out the epic wipe thread in the general discussion. You will see wipes from Plague and Requiem there that would blow your mind. Just find someone who can teach you the battle mechanics and strategies and you will be fine.
One more thing, the level of the generals you sent. One was 14 and the other was 7. When attacking you want to send at least a lvl 15 general. The difference between using an attack vs. a defense is whether you are using primarily melee or ranged as the 'meat' of your attack. What I mean by that is with your both of your attacks, you should have sent a lvl 15 or higher defense general. When using imps/snipers as the primary attackers, use an attacking general.
