How do I promote members

How does promotion work? I wanted to promote a member to officer, clicked on promote and it promoted him to Vice Marshall? I don't understand how this works. Didnt even know there was a vice marshall.How many officers can you have? Afraid to click promote now, have no idea what it will promote to?

There are different levels of promotion, so click promote again for each level.
