No that is definitely not normal. You can try refreshing the app perhaps multiple times. Instructions are in my signature. If that does not help you may need to delete the game and reinstall. If you have created a KabamID then you will not lose any data. Simply go through the tutorial, log back into the game and change back to your world.

Exit game. Double click home. Press and hold game icon till it wiggles. Close using red minus. Click home. Click home again. Start game.
